Human Milk Bank Fundraiser close to meeting target

Thanks to the unwavering support of our community, including recent donations and a generous contribution of $5000 from the Whangārei Lions Club, we have made significant strides in our fundraising efforts. Your donations have brought us closer to our goal of purchasing a Sterifed T30 Pasteuriser for the Whangārei Hospital Te Kotuku maternity unit human milk bank. We are now only $5090 away from our target of $32,000.

“Our members are very grateful for the support from everyone,” said Rotary Whangārei South President Jenni Moore. Our Collective efforts are not just about reaching a financial target. They are about providing a lifeline to vulnerable newborns.

The Sterifed T30 Pasteuriser we aim to purchase will significantly improve the chances of these babies getting a better start in life. Your donations are crucial in making this possible. When a mother’s milk is unavailable, a milk bank offers support by providing screened and pasteurised donor milk while the mother is establishing lactation.

“Donated pasteurised breastmilk is important for feeding sick and premature infants when lactating mothers do not have a sufficient milk supply for their infant’s nutritional needs,” explains Sue Bree, Director of Midwifery and Service Manager, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. “Breastmilk is particularly important for babies who have been born prematurely or are unwell, requiring admission to the Neonatal Unit. These babies have higher nutritional and immunity needs.”
