Local quilters recently donated comforting covers for people experiencing chemotherapy treatment at the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre. Jane Scripps explores the connections linking these donors to their community.

Quilters are caring creative people who give to help others, and the quilts they create are warm and comforting, colourful, and tell a story. Human beings naturally like to help people in difficult situations; these two parts have come together in the gifting of some comforting covers for people experiencing chemotherapy treatment. They are for use at home and at the centre. There are at least 3 community groups connected in this story-can you spot them?

These quilters are connected to the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre through one of its members using the facility and another being a member of U3A Whangarei. The photo above shows representatives of the quilting group, Anne and Lynne, and those receiving them, Louise and Sarah.

Here is a frequent example of how we think of others. If you’d like to support the centre for those ‘nice to have’ extras for staff and patients, you can make a donation to the Jim Carney Cancer Centre Fund here. If that donation is $1,000 or above, you can choose to have a named leaf added to the Pohutukawa Donor Tree that adorns the entrance wall of the Centre.

Recently, U3A Whangarei invited Northland Community Foundation’s Jane Scripps to speak at its monthly gathering. Jane described what a Community Foundation is and does and provided a range of examples of how a person, group or community can make their dream for their community a reality. A lively audience provided plenty of participation and ensured they took away a wide range of information to share amongst friends and whanau. It was interesting to learn from one member of the audience that U3A had been a founding funder of Sistema.
