About Time Rolling Ball Clock
About Time Rolling Ball Clock
Every millisecond has been accounted for in an eight-year project worked on by seven time-smart Whangarei men. The result is a perfected, full-scale model of the About Time ball clock sculpture, a feat of engineering which will be replicated in permanent format Whangarei's Town Basin. "It's got to be really top-notch construction," About Time committee member Peter Romer said.
The seven volunteers, with a mix of engineering and design backgrounds, have been quietly tinkering away on their ”citizen science” project at a warehouse space on Reyburn House Lane. Now they are inviting the public in to see the model which took eight years to plan and build.
It has four main rails: one labelled with seconds, two with minutes and one with hours. Thirty-five 115mm diameter balls speed around the large structure, which is 6 metres long, 4m wide and 2.5m tall.
The top rail receives a ball from a ratcheted electronic motor every 15 seconds, dumping it onto the rail below every minute, while the other balls disperse. Every 10 minutes, one of the ”minute” balls drops onto the 10-minute rail below, while every hour, one of those balls becomes an hour marker.
Confused? Imagine trying to build it, complete with a washing machine motor and series of cogs that must deliver balls at precisely the right moment so the clock will continue to run on time.
The clock also includes a section designed to teach people the basics of physics, including a small lifting version of Te Matau A Pohe Bridge and a pedalling metal man who needs a name, Mr Romer said. Article from NORTHERN ADVOCATE 9 Jan 2017 11:30 am
Help Fundraise for the permanent full scale model of the About Time ball clock sculpture:
These highly talented engineers and designers have been working on the About Time – Rolling Ball Clock project for more than ten years now. These men are local heroes who have contributed their own money, thousands of hours and extraordinary expertise to bring this engineering masterpiece to our city. There is nothing else like it in the world! The government has contributed $750,000 but before they can uplift this funding About Time need to raise $150,000.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust
Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust
The Northland-based Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust (CC23406) was established in 2002, as a charitable umbrella and support organisation for the Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) marine education and Whitebait Connection (WBC) freshwater education programmes. These are both leading models in education for sustainability in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The Trust sees education as a vital part of society and central to all environmental restoration. Both programmes involve young people, their parents and the wider community.
The programmes reinforce simple concepts such as the uniqueness of our freshwater and marine biodiversity and provide an active focus on conservation of these environments through education and action.
The goal is to empower and support communities to achieve marine and freshwater conservation through science based experiential programmes, resources, projects and community engagement.
The programmes focus on schools as a focal point for communities to come together and see the future of marine and freshwater through the eyes of their children, thereby motivating meaningful learning and long-term behaviour change in both today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

Puketi Forest Endowment Fund
The Puketi Forest Endowment Fund has been set up under the umbrella of Northland Foundation, for the maintenance and restoration of Puketi Forest.
Puketi Forest Trust, through its project ‘Oh Mai Puketi’ (Awaken Puketi), is working to restore and protect Puketi Forest, an ancient kauri forest located near Kerikeri. The Forest contains magnificent stands of kauri, podocarp and hardwood trees and a rich ecological diversity including 370 recorded species of plants, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. A comprehensive trapping network for pest control has been established over 5,500 hectares and significant progress has already been made to improve the health of the forest. Friends of the Foundation and Future 50
Friends of the Foundation and Future 50
The Future 50 Fund is looking for 50 individuals or local businesses that are committed to giving $20 per week to help fund our core operations. This money will go towards promoting Northland Community Foundation to future donors and grant recipients, processing applications for grants, as well as everyday costs like wages, software, office equipment and consumables.
Your donation may be worth even more than you think. Individuals can claim a 33.33 percent tax credit for all donations over $5 they make. Donations made through Payroll Giving are also eligible for tax credits of 33.33 percent but have the added advantage that the credit is given automatically through your pay. Hence, for a $20 donation only $13.40 is taken from your pay! Companies donating to the fund can claim tax deductions (a reduction in the amount of taxable income) for all donations made.
We are also looking for Friends of the Foundation. If you are an individual or you represent a corporation, and you would like to make a one-off donation to support the operational costs of the Foundation, we would love to hear from you. Friends of the Foundation will be invited to special events and kept informed with our biannual newsletter.
By becoming Friends of the Foundation, you belong to an exclusive group of people who help support and sustain our important work within the community. You can help to ensure that our fees stay low for our community. Endowment funds are currently only charged at 1% per annum and pass through funds at 10%, and we’d love to keep it that way.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal
Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal
Since the Appeal first began in 2007, Countdown customers and staff have raised $12.8 million to support thousands of sick kiwi kids and their families around the country. Northland DHB Child, Youth, Maternal, Public & Oral Health general manager Jeanette Wedding told the audience over those 12 years Northland DHB has received $860,000 of those funds.
The Face of the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal this year is four and a half year old Zane Williams. Zane is one of five New Zealanders diagnosed with a rare genetic variant that affects how his brain works and because of this he has been diagnosed with global developmental delay, intellectual impairment and autism. Zane’s mother Nicole Alach said she first came to the Child Health Centre just after his first birthday when he was still not yet crawling. A blood test revealed the deletion on his 12th Chromosome, and from there they have had intense, engaged wrap around services from the Child Health Centre.
Northland DHB Child Health Services manager Yvonne Hunter said their wish list for 2019 includes new play equipment for the Whangarei Hospital Whānau House. The Whānau House has on average 80 children per month staying overnight. Currently, there is no area for the children to play and lacks child proof fencing. Yvonne said they aim to use the money raised to create a more homely environment to ensure children are entertained and distracted while their families are dealing with their siblings spending time in hospital.
Added to the list are various pieces of medical equipment selected especially to ease the stress levels of children undergoing procedures such as a vein viewer which allows for easy location of a vein to insert a needle for taking bloods and giving lifesaving medication. Sleep apnoea monitors will be purchased for the Children’s Ward and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) to monitor breathing in premature infants and for babies who are at high risk of sudden unexplained death in infancy (SUDI). Fridges are also on the list for SCBU and the Child Health Centre to keep expressed milk at the correct temperature for babies and for storing immunisations safely to allow for opportunistic vaccination.
Yvonne said last year they were handed a cheque for $81,000 which has made a significant difference to children with disabilities who have the use of a new wheelchair and mobility scooter both in the Child Health Centre and for use in the community. They were also able to purchase glucose monitoring systems for children with diabetes, a trauma stretcher, breast pumps, portable and wall mounted ophthalmoscopes for Child Health Centre and the Children’s Ward. Child Protection and Gateway Services received an IPad to use for distraction therapy when children are undergoing procedures. Kaitaia Hospital received a heated cot, and portable blood pressure monitors. The team at the Child Health Service added $2000 to the Appeal from funds raised at a movie night and soup days and Yvonne said they are planning more joint fundraising again this year.
Health Fund PLUS has been set up by Northland DHB and Northland Community Foundation to provide a way for people to give to the DHB by way of donations or endowments. Health Fund PLUS enables Northland DHB to purchase equipment and services over and above what can be purchased through Government funding, helping the organisation provide the best quality healthcare possible to the people of Northland.

Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre
Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre
The Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre was built so that many Northlanders would be able to have treatment in Whangarei, in a state of the art facility, saving the long trip to Auckland and back.
Northland Community Foundation was the force behind the original fundraising programme to build the Cancer Treatment Centre. “Project Promise” galvanised a region to raise $3m in 3 years to build this vital Centre for people in Northland dealing with Cancer.
Project Promise touched the hearts of thousands of Northlanders who gave willingly and generously to support this new building and many people will benefit every year as a result. The large, light, airy facility with superb equipment and furniture has already made a difference to those people on their journey with Cancer.
A history of the project is located here on the Northland District Health Board website: http://redevelopment.northlanddhb.org.nz/projects/cancer-centre/project-history/

Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund
Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund
The Contact Energy Northland Renal Fund supports dialysis patients by funding applications of up to $500 towards items that would improve their quality of life on home dialysis.
In 2009 Contact Energy and the Northland Community Foundation established the Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund.
Contact Energy gifted $28,200 to “benefit low income residents of the Far North regions of New Zealand”, one of the most vulnerable communities, where the majority of the renal patients come from. The Northland Foundation manages the Fund on behalf of Northland DHB and after careful investment grew the fund to $38,000.
In 2016 distributions began, and 24 grants were allocated to Northland dialysis patients needing support to improve their quality of life on home dialysis. Grants have now totalled approximately $24,000 and have been allocated for purposes ranging from a generator to prevent loss of dialysis during power cuts to recliner chairs and contributions to power bills, with a further $14,000 remaining to allocate.
Because of the Contact Energy Renal Endowment Fund the last two winters have been a little easier to get through for Ruakaka renal patient Desiree Goldsmith thanks for a grant she received from the Contact Energy Renal Fund that helps pay hefty power bills to keep her lifesaving dialysis machine running.
Desiree has Alport Syndrome which is a disease that damages the tiny blood vessels in her kidneys. She was first diagnosed in 2001 and had eight months of dialysis before her mother donated one of her kidneys for her to have a transplant. Since then, her kidney function has reduced to 20 percent, she has lost part of her eyesight and hearing and is now unable to work because she has no immune system.
Because of her situation, social workers at Northland DHB put Desiree forward to receive a payment from the Contact Energy Renal Fund. All Desiree needed to do was to decide what would be the best way to use the money to help her remain independent. She already had a lazy boy chair to dialyse in, so decided to put the money towards her power costs.
Desiree tries to keep her costs down by turning off switches around the house and has been contributing some her own money towards her monthly power bill since she first got the fund in 2016 to make the money last as long as possible.
She said she would be stressing without this support, which in turn would make her sick. “It’s a lifesaver. I just couldn’t have coped and I’m so thankful to Contact Energy.”Click here for the Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund Media Releases:

Northland COVID-19 Recovery Fund
Northland COVID-19 Recovery Fund
The Northland COVID-19 Recovery Fund (Northland COVID-19 Fund) was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding will go towards essential services supporting our most vulnerable Northland communities dealing with COVID-19.
Received funds will be allocated via recommendations from a select Panel including Northland District Health Board, Civil Defence and Ministry of Social Development. Funding will be prioritised for (but not limited to) services that provide welfare support for vulnerable people, families, the elderly, kuia and kaumatua who live in rural and isolated communities.
NCF’s first grant was made in April in response to an immediate need within the Moerewa community. NCF provided $5,000 in funding to He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust (HIKTT) so that they can continue to provide care packs to residents living in and around Moerewa. These care packs consist of essentials such as flour, bread, eggs, fruits, vegetables, kumaras and hygiene products. They are distributed to vulnerable families and the elderly in the community. Over 1000 packs have already been given out since 23 March and will continue weekly.
Moerewa is a small town in Northland about five kilometres to the West of Kawakawa. It has a population of approximately 1,500 and over 88 percent of its residents are Maori. The town has been battling with unemployment and poverty due to restructuring and the loss of rural services over the years. These pre-existing conditions compounded with the current COVID-19 situation have made life even harder for the locals living in Moerewa. Please click here for a link to our most recent Media Release about our grant to the Moerewa community: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/delivering-hope-and-aroha-during-lockdown/
NCF also granted $5000 to One Double Five Community House for their 155 Open Arms service so that they can continue to feed the homeless and many vulnerable families in Whangarei.
155 Open Arms – Te Ruruhau Onga Ringa Ringa Tuwhera is the day care centre in Whangarei that provides food, shelter and other services for people who are homeless or living rough. It is a place where people in crisis can connect with various health, housing and community services. Click here for the full Media Release: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/helping-the-most-vulnerable-in-our-community/
Multicultural Whangarei also received a grant to help new migrants and international students who do not qualify for government support and are now unemployed during this time of crisis. It is providing food vouchers and mobile top-up vouchers to these vulnerable groups so that they are not isolated and do not fall through the cracks.
NCF also created the Northland COVID-19 Recovery Patient Support Fund which provides $500 grants towards patients of Northland District Health Board (NDHB) Hospitals. Priority is given to older patients (55 years plus): are living in rural or isolated areas (not limited to), are in a difficult financial situation, have a acute or long-term health condition(s) and have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients may use the grant on (but not limited to) accommodation, groceries, internet connecting devices, utilities, etc. NCF will pay on receipt of invoice. Social workers and nurses from Northland hospitals will identify potential recipients of this fund. Click here to see our latest media release about this Fund: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/3023-2/
Please note, if a donor has a different purpose they would like their donation to go towards, please get in touch with us here: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/contact/
All grants are dependent on donations from our community. If just 10 percent of Northland’s population donated $100 each, the COVID-19 Fund would be able to provide over $1 million in funds for Northland’s most vulnerable communities. Please give your support today! Click here to donate now: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/donate/
You can also donate on our Givealittle page.
We realise everyone is under immense pressure right now, so we just want to remind you that you can receive a receipt and request 33 percent tax rebate from the government for your donation. Go to the IRD’s website to get your refund.
We would greatly appreciate any support that you are able to give during this extremely difficult time. With your donation we will be able to support our most vulnerable population in Northland.
The COVID-19 Recovery Fund will deliver essential resources to a variety of urgent and emerging needs in our communities. The distribution of this important community wide response will be managed as effectively and efficiently as possible by Northland Community Foundation. There will be some costs in the delivery of this recovery fund, but we expect the costs of delivering this crucial support will be no more than 10 percent. We are 100 percent committed to getting donor funds to those who really need it and look forward to partnering with you to make a real difference where it is most needed.
Thanks to a major anonymous donor, Foundation North, Tindall Foundation, and the Warehouse Ltd for your support of the Northland COVID-19 Recovery Fund:

Northland Sport Fund
Northland Sport Fund
Kiwis love their sport. Whether we participate on the field or on the sideline, we love to be involved. Our Northland Sport Fund gives you the opportunity to ensure young (and older) Kiwis stay fit and active.
In 2016, Sport Northland and the Northland Community Foundation (NCF) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of a Sports Fund.
As part of the MOA, Sport Northland transferred their Kauri Club Fund of $191,000 to the NCF to kick-start the Sports Fund. This fund was originally established back in 1988 when local sponsor Northern Bakeries granted Sport Northland some seed funding, and this was added to in 2000 after the family of the late Garry Frew (Sports Editor at the Northern Advocate) donated part of his estate to Sport Northland for the benefit of young sportspeople.
The fund had always been held by Sport Northland in perpetuity, the distributions of which have always been used for talent development of promising young Northland sportspeople.
Since the establishment of the Sports Endowment Fund, the Foundation has been instrumental in growing the fund to the current level of $238,000 through their investment partners Craigs Investments. Sport Northland now uses the distributions from the fund for the operation of the Educare Northland Sports Talent Hub, which provides talent development services, grants and scholarships to promising young Northland sportspeople to better prepare them to reach the top of their chosen sport.
Both Sport Northland and the Foundation encourage all Northlanders who love active recreation and sport to consider leaving a gift to the Sports Endowment Fund. Take a look here at our Northland Sport Giving Brochure: Northland Sport Fund 3-fold brochure PRINT2
Your gift can help anyone in active recreation and sport – a young sportsperson, teams, coaches, children at school, adults or seniors – it’s your choice. It could even go towards sports facilities or a particular sporting code such as netball, hockey, football, or swimming to name a few.
You can gift directly to the Fund so your gift can be used now and you can receive a 33% tax credit. Visit our donate page here: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/donate/ to donate by credit-card or through via bank account. Note: you will need to choose the Northland Sport Fund and then write the particular area of interest you have for the funds in the comments.
Or we can invest your gift with Craigs Investment Partners and deliver the interest from these funds back to your sports fund every year, forever! You can also gift through your Will, and it can be as much or as little as you want, for example 5% to 10%. See our Legal Resources page here for more information: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/resources/legal-resources/
