Sistema Whangārei – Pathways to the Future Fund
Sistema Whangārei – Pathways to the Future Fund
Sistema Whangārei – Toi Akorangi was grateful to receive $20,000 from The Tikipunga Children’s Home Trust to start the Pathways to the Future Fund in 2021 to support the budding musicians of Whangārei.
Sistema Whangarei -Toi Akorangi has been teaching orchestral instruments and musicianship free of charge, since April 2013, to children and young people in Whangārei who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to learn.Sistema Whangarei – Toi Akorangi began on the 16th April 2013, meeting at the Māori Women’s Welfare league rooms, and had the privilege to work with 16 tamariki. In the beginning, they had no money and no instruments. Bunnings Warehouse gave them some materials and the Men’s Shed made 35 “Whisper Instruments” for them. Whisper instruments are cut out shapes of violins and cellos which make no sound. All of the teaching artists provided their mahi free of charge and the tamariki had fun learning about playing the violin/cello and how music works.
10 years later, with the support of their community, they are still going strong. They now work with over 230 students every week.
“Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu” – With support we can all succeed.
Nga mihi nunui kia koutou Arohatino nui, Eden”
Students learn in ensemble for 7 weeks of every school term and for 4 holiday programs each year. They have the opportunity to perform in at least 8 concerts per year and many senior players have performed alongside the Auckland Youth Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Every Sistema student is able to have an instrument to take home and practice and can access music to practice and videos to support their learning. Students from Sistema Whāngarei – Toi Akorangi receive high levels of music tuition and everything is provided free of charge.
To find out more, please visit their Facebook page or website.
If you’d like to support Sistema Whangarei -Toi Akorangi to continue to provide this opportunity for the tamariki and rangatahi of Whangārei, please contribute to the Sistema Whangārei – Pathways to the Future Fund.

These are just some of the projects being funded via the 2020 distribution of over $88,500 made by Northland Community Foundation through the Northland Grassroots Fund. In 2020 Toi Ngāpuhi was delighted to receive $8,500 from the Grassroots Fund towards their Taiohī Taiohā wānanga toi series. These Māori arts wānanga were for youth aged 16-24 to enable them to be immersed in a series of workshops led by some leading Ngāpuhi creative practitioners from across Te Tai Tokerau. They were based at marae from the Hokianga through to Whangārei. Click on the link here to find out more: Northland Grassroots Fund and Taiohī Taiohā Wānanga Series

Northland Emergency Response Fund
Northland Emergency Response Fund
In 2020, Northland’s vulnerable population struggled with the health, social, and financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, thousands were left without power, water, and road access, and many were also made homeless and lost their food stores and belongings following Cyclone Gabrielle.
Emergencies such as pandemics and natural disasters can strike at any time, and we need to be ready. That’s why Northland Community Foundation established the Northland Emergency Response Fund.window.DonorBox = { widgetLinkClassName: ‘custom-dbox-popup’ }
Can you help?
Donate today to build a fund that will support our most vulnerable communities to recover from Cyclone Gabrielle right now. Once the current need has passed, the fund will continue to grow so that it’s ready to deliver when the next emergency arrives.
We will deliver the funds as quick response grants to local community groups working on emergency response and recovery. By having the funds available in reserve we can respond much more quickly, so the help gets to the people in need as soon as possible.
If you can assist with a donation, please help us build a fund to respond to Cyclone Gabrielle and future emergencies in Te Tai Tokerau Northland.

Waitangi National Trust Endowment Fund
Waitangi National Trust Endowment Fund
The Waitangi National Trust and Northland Community Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the Waitangi National Trust Endowment Fund. This Fund will help create a sustainable future for Waitangi, donations received will be invested and the annual interest delivered out to support the conservation, maintenance and preservation of heritage buildings at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Funds can also support the provision of education programmes for New Zealanders, especially children, and conservation of native wildlife on the Waitangi estate.
The Waitangi National Trust’s primary responsibility is to manage the ‘Birthplace of our Nation’ , providing all New Zealanders with a place to feel at home. The Treaty Grounds was the site of the first signing of the Declaration of Independence, He Whakaputanga, in 1835, and the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, in 1840. The Treaty Grounds is part of an estate of 506 hectares on the coast at Paihia, and include the restored Treaty House – home of the first British Resident, James Busby, who assisted with the drafting of the original Treaty document; Te Rau Aroha – Museum of the Price of Citizenship, which commemorates the service and sacrifice of Māori in the NZ Armed Forces; Te Kōngahu – Museum of Waitangi, which tells of the relationship between Māori and the Crown from first contact until the present day; Te Whare Rūnanga (the House of Assembly – a carved meeting house designed in Maori traditional form); Te Korowai ō Maikuku (waka house) which houses the great war canoe Ngātokimatawhaorua; and the Waitangi Flagstaff which marks the spot where the Treaty was first signed on 6 February 1840.
The Waitangi Estate was purchased and put into trust in 1932 by then Governor-General Lord Bledisloe, realising a dream held by many Māori that the significance of Waitangi be properly recognised. The Waitangi National Trust Board is made up of representatives from all the regions of the country and from various families, Māori and Pākehā, with historical connections to the original signing of the Treaty in 1840.
Chief Executive of the Waitangi National Trust, Greg McManus, says: “By creating the Waitangi National Trust Endowment Fund we hope to raise funds that can be invested for the long-term, delivering annual interest to provide a sustainable source of income for Waitangi forever. Waitangi is heavily dependent on revenue from visitor admissions and receives no government funding for operating, so it is my hope that this endowment fund it will help create a more sustainable, independent future for Waitangi.”
Greta Buchanan, General Manager of the Northland Community Foundation, spoke about the Trust’s Endowment Fund: “The Waitangi National Trust is a National Treasure and should be looked after as such by all the people of New Zealand.”
The Northland Community Foundation would like to encourage all New Zealanders to gift to the Fund. A gift to the Waitangi National Trust Endowment Fund will continue to help protect Waitangi for future generations because the capital will be retained and invested, and interest from investments will provide an annual income to assist with the Trust’s objectives.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust
Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust
The Northland-based Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust (CC23406) was established in 2002, as a charitable umbrella and support organisation for the Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) marine education and Whitebait Connection (WBC) freshwater education programmes. These are both leading models in education for sustainability in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The Trust sees education as a vital part of society and central to all environmental restoration. Both programmes involve young people, their parents and the wider community.
The programmes reinforce simple concepts such as the uniqueness of our freshwater and marine biodiversity and provide an active focus on conservation of these environments through education and action.
The goal is to empower and support communities to achieve marine and freshwater conservation through science based experiential programmes, resources, projects and community engagement.
The programmes focus on schools as a focal point for communities to come together and see the future of marine and freshwater through the eyes of their children, thereby motivating meaningful learning and long-term behaviour change in both today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

Donate to the Jim Carney Cancer and Blood Services Treatment Centre
The Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre was built so that many Northlanders would be able to have treatment in Whangarei, in a state of the art facility, saving the long trip to Auckland and back.
If you require assistance from the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre please email admin.oncology@northlanddhb.org.nz
Northland Community Foundation was the force behind the original fundraising programme to build the Cancer Treatment Centre. “Project Promise” galvanised a region to raise $3m in 3 years for this vital Centre for people in Northland dealing with Cancer.
Project Promise touched the hearts of thousands of Northlanders who gave willingly and generously to support this new building and many people will benefit every year as a result. The large, light, airy facility with superb equipment and furniture has already made a difference to those people on their journey with Cancer.
Although the centre is now built, your help is still needed. You might like to give to improve the facilities or to help get the “nice to have” things that make a patient’s visit more comfortable.
You can donate directly to the Health Fund PLUS – Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre Fund so your gift can be used now by the service and you receive a 33% tax credit. Pohutukawa Donor Tree – Cancer and Blood Services Treatment Centre
Pohutukawa Donor Tree – Cancer and Blood Services Treatment Centre
The “Pohutukawa Donor Tree” inside the Jim Carney Cancer and Blood Services Treatment Centre leads on from the previously successful fundraising campaign 'Buy a Brick' for the building, refurbishment and support of the Centre. Now that the Centre is built, and the brick wall is complete, leaves for the Pohutukawa Tree are available for purchase at $1,000 each. Donated funds go towards supporting the ongoing work and extra 'nice to haves' at the Centre.
You will see that every Pohutukawa Tree ‘Leaf’ can have a message on it. In addition, you can choose your own message (up to 40 characters) so that “your” leaf is unique and personalised.
The team greatly values the gift of a ‘Leaf’ at the Cancer Treatment Centre as it is a visual reminder of the people who have supported their work, as well as a reminder of the funds that have been raised.
You can ‘Buy a Leaf’ by clinking on the Donorbox link here: Pohutukawa Donor Tree – Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre | Northland Community Foundation (Powered by Donorbox) via internet banking or credit card.

Northland Child Health Services
Northland Child Health Services
The Child Health Team are based at The Child Health Centre located within Whangarei Hospital Campus. This is a purpose built unit for the assessment of childhood medical, physical and developmental problems. The Child Health Team also run the Whangarei Children's Ward, and Child Health Clinics at Kaitaia, Dargaville, Bay of Island Hospitals, Kaikohe and Rawene.
Our current major fundraising Appeal for the Northland Child Health Services is for the Whangarei Children’s Ward Refurbishment Appeal. We know that tamariki who are welcomed and looked after in a caring, calm, supportive environment when they are in hospital are less likely to regress in their health, which makes for a quicker recovery back to good health and less stressful experience. This is something we would all want for our tamariki should they be in this situation.
The purpose of this fundraising campaign is to ensure that every child who becomes a patient at Whangārei Hospital benefits fully from a calm and supportive environment. Donations to this appeal will provide items such as comfortable chairs and beds for patients and caregivers, distraction devices (interactive wall designs, graphite wall wraps, treatment room monitors, TVs for patient rooms, special learning equipment, laptops, gaming consoles), upgraded furniture and new whiteware. We will also need your support with fundraising for Te Reo Māori resources (wall decals, books, and games) and additional paediatric medical equipment specifically designed to support the clinical needs of our tamariki. This in turn will have the added benefit of helping to reduce the pressure on an already stretched health system.
With your support for this appeal, we can go above and beyond the traditional clinical setting, which is more conducive to the care and environment we want to provide to our tamariki in hospital. You can find out more about the Appeal and how you can donate here: Whangarei Children’s Ward Refurbishment
We also manage and seek donations for the Child Health Advancement Research Trust (CHART) Endowment Fund. The CHART Fund was established in February 2007, with Northland Community Foundation (NCF) under the Health Endowment Fund. The objectives of the fund are for the advancement and research of health needs of children and young people in Northland. It is also to establish seed funding for a longer-term endowment in the hope that the fund may attract further donations so that over time it can provide an ongoing source of funding. CHART was set up initially by clinicians at the Child Health Centre of Northland District Health Board (DHB). The acquisition of the assets and funding of previous projects was a result of the voluntary efforts of the group led by Dr Roger Tuck as Chair of the Committee. (Please note: the CHART Fund can also accept direct pass-through donations to projects happening now).
On November the 16th 2020 the Northland District Health Board (Northland DHB) Child Health Services Team and Northland Community Foundation (NCF) held an afternoon tea and presentation to celebrate and energise the CHART Fund. The presentation showcased research and quality improvement projects across many child health disciplines.
To find out more about the presentation click here: Child Health Advancement Research Trust Fund To find out more about the recent distributions of the fund click here: CHART Fund Sensory Library Purchases
We also receive other donations from the community to Child Health Services including the Whangarei Special Care Baby Unit. Thanks to a generous donation from Dairy Goat Co-operative Trust to Northland DHB via Health Fund PLUS, a time-saving device has been installed into the Whangarei Hospital Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) enabling staff to analyse test results faster. Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund
Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund
The Contact Energy Northland Renal Fund supports dialysis patients by funding applications of up to $500 towards items that would improve their quality of life on home dialysis.
In 2009 Contact Energy and the Northland Community Foundation established the Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund.
Contact Energy gifted $28,200 to “benefit low income residents of the Far North regions of New Zealand”, one of the most vulnerable communities, where the majority of the renal patients come from. The Northland Foundation manages the Fund on behalf of Northland DHB and after careful investment grew the fund to $38,000.
In 2016 distributions began, and 24 grants were allocated to Northland dialysis patients needing support to improve their quality of life on home dialysis. Grants have now totalled approximately $24,000 and have been allocated for purposes ranging from a generator to prevent loss of dialysis during power cuts to recliner chairs and contributions to power bills, with a further $14,000 remaining to allocate.
Because of the Contact Energy Renal Endowment Fund the last two winters have been a little easier to get through for Ruakaka renal patient Desiree Goldsmith thanks for a grant she received from the Contact Energy Renal Fund that helps pay hefty power bills to keep her lifesaving dialysis machine running.
Desiree has Alport Syndrome which is a disease that damages the tiny blood vessels in her kidneys. She was first diagnosed in 2001 and had eight months of dialysis before her mother donated one of her kidneys for her to have a transplant. Since then, her kidney function has reduced to 20 percent, she has lost part of her eyesight and hearing and is now unable to work because she has no immune system.
Because of her situation, social workers at Northland DHB put Desiree forward to receive a payment from the Contact Energy Renal Fund. All Desiree needed to do was to decide what would be the best way to use the money to help her remain independent. She already had a lazy boy chair to dialyse in, so decided to put the money towards her power costs.
Desiree tries to keep her costs down by turning off switches around the house and has been contributing some her own money towards her monthly power bill since she first got the fund in 2016 to make the money last as long as possible.
She said she would be stressing without this support, which in turn would make her sick. “It’s a lifesaver. I just couldn’t have coped and I’m so thankful to Contact Energy.”Click here for the Contact Energy Northland Renal Endowment Fund Media Releases:

You may be keen to give, but you don’t have a particular idea of where you would like your gift to go. We can help with that. The Northland Fund has been created to ensure that regular research and information gives us the best understanding of the needs of our communities. Grants from the Northland Fund will be made to a variety of organisations and charities depending on the greatest need at the time. You and your family can be assured that your gift will count where it is needed most.
You can gift directly to the Northland Fund so your gift can be used now and you receive a 33% tax credit. Visit our donate page here https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/donate/ to donate by credit card or through your bank account. You will need to choose Northland Fund.
Or we can invest your gift and deliver the interest from these funds back to Northland community services every year, forever! Click here to see how your gift can grow and give forever: How to Grow your Gift
You can also gift through your Will, and it can be as much or as little as you want, for example 5% to 10%. See our Legal Resources page here for more information: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/resources/legal-resources/

Sport
Kiwis love their sport. Whether we participate on the field or on the sideline, we love to be involved. Our Northland Sport Endowment Fund gives you the opportunity to ensure young (and older) Kiwis stay fit and active.
In 2016, Sport Northland and the Northland Community Foundation (NCF) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of a Northland Sport Endowment Fund.
As part of the MOA, Sport Northland transferred its Kauri Club Funds of $191,000 to the NCF to kick-start the Sports Northland Endowment Fund. This fund was originally established back in 1988 when local sponsor Northern Bakeries granted Sport Northland some seed funding, and this was added to in 2000 after the family of the late Garry Frew (Sports Editor at the Northern Advocate) donated part of his estate to Sport Northland for the benefit of young sportspeople.
The fund had always been held by Sport Northland in perpetuity, the distributions of which have always been used for talent development of promising young Northland sportspeople.
Since the establishment of the Sport Northland Endowment Fund, the Foundation has been instrumental in growing the fund through their investment partners Craigs Investments. Sport Northland now uses the distributions from the endowment fund for the Kauri Club Fund, which provides talent development services, grants and scholarships to promising young Northland sportspeople to better prepare them to reach the top of their chosen sport.
Both Sport Northland and the Foundation encourage all Northlanders who love active recreation and sport to consider leaving a gift to the Sport Northland Endowment Fund. Take a look here at our Northland Sport Giving Brochure: Northland Sport Fund-fold brochure
Your gift can help anyone in active recreation and sport – a young sportsperson, teams, coaches, children at school, adults or seniors – it’s your choice. It could even go towards sports facilities or a particular sporting code such as netball, hockey, football, or swimming to name a few.
You can gift directly to the Fund so your gift can be used now and you can receive a 33% tax credit. Visit our donate page here: https://northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz/donate/ to donate by credit-card or through via bank account. Note: you will need to choose the Northland Sport Fund and then write the particular area of interest you have for the funds in the comments.
Or we can invest your gift and deliver the interest from these funds back to your sports fund every year, forever!

The Future 50 and Friends of the Foundation funds future-proof the foundation's operational costs. The financial strength of the foundation is important for long-term sustainability. This fund helps the foundation with operating costs, ensuring it will continue in perpetuity.
Operating costs are absolutely vital to not only the long-term sustainability of the foundation, but the ongoing growth goals to make Northland Community Foundation a true staple in our community for generations to come.
We encourage contributions to this fund from anyone, big or small, regular or one-off.The Future 50 Fund is looking for 50 individuals or local businesses that are committed to giving $20 per week to help fund our core operations. This money will go towards promoting Northland Community Foundation to future donors and grant recipients, processing applications for grants, as well as everyday costs like wages, software, office equipment and consumables. Your donation may be worth even more than you think. Individuals can claim a 33.33 percent tax credit for all donations over $5 they make. Donations made through Payroll Giving are also eligible for tax credits of 33.33 percent but have the added advantage that the credit is given automatically through your pay. Hence, for a $20 donation only $13.40 is taken from your pay! Companies donating to the fund can claim tax deductions (a reduction in the amount of taxable income) for all donations made.
We are also looking for Supporters and Friends of the Foundation. If you are an individual or you represent a corporation, and you would like to support the operational costs of the Foundation, we would love to hear from you. Supporters and Friends of the Foundation will be invited to special events and kept informed with our biannual newsletter. By becoming Supporters and Friends of the Foundation, you belong to an exclusive group of people who help support and sustain our important work within the community. You can help to ensure that our fees stay low for our community. Endowment funds are currently only charged at 1% per annum and pass through funds at 10%, and we’d love to keep it that way.
